Busy Couple of Weeks in K

Dear Kindergarten Families,

I can feel it, do you feel it too?  It’s the feeling that time is racing by.  I look at the calendar and I can hardly believe my eyes.  I wish I could somehow slow it down or turn it back, but time marches on.  It seems like only a month or so ago we were baking a gingerbread man and running through the school at full throttle to find out where the mysterious cookie/boy had disappeared to.  But, when I run through all the experiences in my mind, I realize that more time has surely passed.  I must say, that it has been an absolute delight to have spent these lovely days with your children.  I feel that we have all grown in so many ways this year, in particular our awareness of how each of us has a unique gift to bring to the world and if we are loving, thoughtful, and can see outside of ourselves, we can experience the wonder of God that is alive in each of us.  I have witnessed this so many times this year that it has profoundly touched my heart.  Experiencing your children this year has been a true gift for me.  It has been a time I have dearly valued and cherished. Your children are truly a treasure to work with.  They are hardworking, thoughtful, and they seek ways to grow and improve themselves.  Who could ask for more!

This week we will be finishing up our DRA assessments.  In Literacy the children have been given the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) that we discussed at our Literacy Night.  Books will be selected at your child’s developmental level and he/she will be assessed for decoding skills, fluency, and comprehension. It is important to practice retelling stories in chronological order and remembering the character's names.  In Social Studies we will be looking at mapping skills.  Your child should be able to locate the following:  Left and Right, North, South, East, West, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Great Lakes, the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, Canada, and Oregon.

Next week we will be assessing for Religion and Math.  In Religion we will be listening for the following prayers: the Our Father and the Guardian Angel Prayer as well as correctly making the sign of the cross. In Math we will be assessing addition skills.

May is the month that we honor Mary, Jesus' Mother.  The children will be introduced to the Hail Mary Prayer.  Please reinforce this through practice at bedtime.

Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace.
Our Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Sincerely,

Leigh Ann
